Dr. Pimentel has extensive experience in functional safety in Operational Technology (OT) and industrial control system (ICS) environments that include oil & gas, petrochemical, and automotive.
He has an interest in and continued to be involved with standards having served as a standards liaison between the Industrial Electronics Society (IES) and the IEEE Standards Board. He has participated and continues to participate on various IEEE, SAE, and ISO standards. He is on the SAE Vehicle Electrical Hardware Security Task Force and was a contributor to the U.S. TAG committee on the SAE/ISO 21434 automotive cybersecurity standard as well as on the ISO 21448 standard task U.S. TAG committee. Juan is also on the TC 22 SC 32 WG 8 US - Functional Safety committee responsible for the ISO 26262 standard.

About the event
Safety practices are becoming more regulated as industries adopt a standardized set of practices for designing and testing products. ISO 26262 addresses the needs for an automotive-specific international standard that focuses on safety critical components. ISO 26262 is a derivative of IEC 61508, the generic functional safety standard for electrical and electronic (E/E) systems.
Increasing complexity throughout the automotive industry is resulting in increased efforts to provide safety-compliant systems. For example, modern automobiles use by-wire systems such as throttle-by-wire. This control unit analyzes several factors such as engine speed, vehicle speed, and pedal position.
It is a challenge of the automotive industry to test and validate systems like throttle-by-wire. The goal of ISO 26262 is to provide a unifying safety standard for all automotive E/E systems. Since the publication of Draft International Standard (DIS) of ISO 26262, ISO 26262 has gained traction in the automotive industry.
With everything in the automotive industry becoming more electrified, and the push towards part or full automation, additional safety questions are being raised to cope with new system development. Moreover, safety practices are becoming more regulated as industries adopt a standardized set of practices for designing and testing products. ISO 26262 addresses the needs for an automotive-specific international standard that focuses on safety critical components. Increasing complexity throughout the automotive industry is resulting in increased efforts to provide safety-compliant systems.
As the process landscape continues to grow and change dramatically, and functional safety evolves, the 2024 Automotive Functional Safety Forum has been designed in close consultation with important group members as a sharing platform for solutions and best practices for achieving compliance with ISO 26262 & SOTIF, giving attendees the opportunity to discuss different topics. as well considering connections between functional safety, and developments in autonomous driving. This topic is very interesting and the need for automotive safety is growing fast worldwide. This international forum will have an emphasis on various related topics such as the future of automotive functional safety, implementation of ISO 26262, and the functional safety architecture for automated and autonomous driving
Implementing ISO 26262 allows leveraging a common standard to measure how safe a system will be in service. It also provides the ability to reference specific parts of your system because of a common vocabulary provided by the standard. This falls in line with other safety-critical application areas; a common standard provides a way to measure how safe your system is.
The Automotive ISO 26262: Functional Safety Forum is dedicated to the practice of the ISO on different vehicles and the framework of re-use of safety functions. The 2-day conference will have different sessions covering a wide range of topics relevant for all stakeholders in the automotive functional safety sector across Europe and beyond.
