David is transforming a 103 year old bank. The business had for much of this period led the market but in the last decade significant market share has been lost with domestic banks innovating quickly. Through refining the strategy, enhancing the proposition and building the quality of the team performance is now accelerating showing material month on month growth and regaining core banking market share across Retail, Premier, Business Banking and SME segments on both sides of the balance sheet.
Prior to this he led activity to deliver Barclays strategic plan to exit non core markets and divest from Africa. His focus was on defining and delivering a roadmap which enabled Regulatory Deconsolidation ahead of expectations and owning the separation of 3 key client segments, namely Retail, Business Banking and Wealth Management.
Before this David led 2 significant initiatives for Barclays Personal Customer Business in the UK, directly influencing our customer proposition across all UK segments. This involved the development and end to end ownership of a previously under utilised and non-managed channel, through which he reduced operating expenses by 20% and created new customer solutions through 11500 touchpoints. The 2nd initiative included developing and implementing a new approach to existing activity to conform to regulatory changes.
Prior to this David was Market Director for Africa for Barclays Wealth Business, having previously been Business Management Director across the UK Off-shore Islands, covering Banking and Wealth clients across all segments of our business. He joined the Off-shore business having lead the largest and most profitable Retail Banking Operation in Botswana and managing our franchises in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
In a 20+ year career David has successfully run and improved the performance of teams in the UK, the UK Off-shore islands and 14 sub-saharan African markets covering Retail, SME and Corporate banking specialisms, continually driving top level income growth underpinned by strong cost management and exceptional risk control resulting in increased profitability.

Gul was also previously Founder & CEO of FintechExplicatus , a Fintech advisory business which has ensured he is upto date with the latest developments in retail financial services. Gul is also a frequent speaker in international conferences with a focus on retail financial services and fintech.
Gul was raised in the UK, attended Oxford University and was a professional cricket player before joining the financial services industry.
