EV Charging Infrastructure Development and Investment

- To meet the phase out of the Internal Combustion Engine we need the appropriate/viable charging infrastructure for the expected number of registrations in a city or region at a point in time. The main difficulty is the word ‘appropriate’. There is limited vision of what the appropriate infrastructure is, by type, location, and time.
- The opportunity is to install an appropriate/viable infrastructure to enable the transition. This requires a thinking change from; install as many chargers of any type as possible to increase sales to ‘what infrastructure is required to support the likely sales, where and when’.
- We need to ensure that we are facilitating the flow of finance required to fund this appropriate/viable network.
- The sector has seen large capital injections over the last couple of years, and we need to encourage this further.
- There are many factors that impact an investment decision, and therefore working on how to enable these decisions to be made is key. This might include finance enabling factors, such as increasing the availability of historic and predictive data, new partnerships models or development of innovative de-risking financial products, to harness the required private sector investment to deliver on a just transition.
- Big Question: How do we facilitate the flow of finance required to fund the appropriate and necessary charging infrastructure required for a just transition?
