Event Details
In 2024, diminishing profit margins, rising resource costs, and a surge of lower-cost imports from outside the continent have brought the European biofuel industry to a critical impasse.
We are facing a moment that calls for bold action.
We believe that by collaborating across the value chain and sharing best practices and technologies, we can address the challenges confronting the biofuel industry. This conference presents an opportunity to build partnerships and streamline collective efforts, assisting the industry in bouncing back stronger.
Despite these hurdles, the European biofuel market offers numerous investment opportunities, driven by private sector initiatives and supportive government policies. The market is projected to grow substantially, from approximately €163.86 billion in 2024 to around €246.56 billion by 2033.
With over 30 advanced biorefinery projects already operational in the European Union and more slated for the near future, there is significant potential for investment in advanced biofuel production capabilities. The EU remains steadfast in its commitment to advancing sustainable energy in the transport sector, with a strong focus on transitioning to renewable sources. The Renewable Energy Directive II (REDII) establishes binding targets, aiming for advanced biofuels to constitute 3.5% of the energy mix by 2030, particularly by encouraging the use of non-crop feedstocks. Complementing this effort, the EU has introduced regulations to promote sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and maritime fuels.
These policies mandate a more sustainable future for transport. To be part of this transformation, this conference will address the following key areas:
Feedstock Supply Challenges: Rising costs and regulatory pressures are intensifying competition for feedstocks. The EU's phase-out of palm oil and restrictions on other feedstocks necessitate innovative solutions to secure a stable supply of low-GHG feedstocks.
Regulatory Compliance: Navigating EU regulations, particularly the Renewable Energy Directive II (REDII), is essential. The forum will discuss strategies for compliance while leveraging opportunities for advanced biofuels, especially regarding new sustainability criteria and indirect land use change (ILUC).
Technological Advancements: The conference will emphasize the sharing of best practices and innovations in technology among industry players, focusing on advancements in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel to meet future energy demands.
Market Access and Competition: To counter the influx of lower-cost imports, a collective strategy is needed to enhance the competitiveness of European biofuels in both domestic and international markets.
Through multiple networking sessions, participants will have a golden opportunity to connect with their peers and establish partnerships to overcome barriers and accelerate business action in the biofuel industry.
