About the event
At the Africa Wind Energy 2022 Conference and Exhibition, we will take a closer look at ways to tap into the full potential of African Wind Energy. Discussions will centre around the expansion of infrastructure, the electrification of end-use sectors, decarbonising the way we do business, technical troubleshooting, financing, and ultimately, charting the path for the renewable energy sources such as wind to thrive.
With abundant marine resources, year-round sunlight, and much more, Africa certainly has abundant resources to endlessly harness renewable energy. However, the massive potential here is not being seized, with more than 600 million Africans - equivalent to half the population in the continent, still lacking access to any electricity.
A new report by GWEC Market Intelligence suggests in 2020, 821MW of new wind power capacity was installed in Africa and the Middle East, bringing total capacity in the region to 7GW.
The analysis demonstrates South Africa installed 515MW of new wind power capacity last year. The southernmost country in Africa keeps the top spot in the wind power market in the region with 2.5GW of cumulative wind power capacity installed in the country until now.
The wind energy market in South Africa is expected to grow at a CAGR of more than 3% during the forecast period of 2020-2025.
However, according to data published by the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation, the wind potential of the African continent alone is more than 59,000GW.
World Bank data estimates the continent’s technical wind resource potential to be more than 59,000 gigawatts (GW), yet currently-installed capacity represents a miniscule 0.01% of this figure, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC). This untapped potential presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for investors. Most importantly, mass adoption of a renewable energy source such as wind power has the potential for massive job creation, improving the standards of living for the majority of the continent’s population and reducing greenhouse gas emissions and local air pollution.
