Standardization and Interoperability of EV Charging Systems in Africa
As of early 2026, the African e-mobility sector has reached a critical juncture. With over 132,000 electric vehicles (EVs) now navigating the continent's roads, the focus has shifted from mere adoption to the technical backbone of the industry: standardization and interoperability.
The Multi-Standard Challenge
The African market currently faces a "standard's tug-of-war." Historically, European influence cemented CCS2 (Combined Charging System Type 2) as the primary standard for passenger vehicles in regions like South Africa and Morocco. However, the influx of affordable Chinese EVs and localized assembly kits in Kenya and Nigeria has introduced the GB/T standard, creating a fragmented landscape that complicates cross-border travel and infrastructure planning.
Policy as a Harmonizer
A landmark shift occurred in April 2026, when the African Union (AU) endorsed the Continental Framework on Electric Mobility. This framework provides a strategic blueprint for harmonizing charging protocols across member states. By prioritizing open standards like OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol), the AU aims to ensure that hardware from different manufacturers can communicate with any management software, preventing "vendor lock-in" and lowering costs for Charge Point Operators (CPOs).
Interoperability and eRoaming
Real-world usability depends on interoperability—the ability for a driver to use one app or card across multiple charging networks. Initiatives like the Charge Africa MoU and the integration of eRoaming platforms are beginning to link private networks. In Kenya, the 2026 National Electric Mobility Policy now mandates that new commercial developments allocate at least $5\%$ of parking to EV charging, further pushing the need for universal payment and access systems.
The path forward for Africa lies in a "standard-agnostic" infrastructure that supports both CCS2 and GB/T while leveraging solar-powered microgrids to bypass grid instability. Achieving this technical synergy is the only way to unlock a truly unified, Pan-African e-mobility market.
