The Role of Renewable Ethanol in the EU's Green Future

Every viable technique for reducing emissions will be needed as the EU moves toward climate neutrality. Renewable ethanol is a decarbonization solution that is already having a significant effect on the fight against global warming. It is produced sustainably from crops and agricultural waste and residue.

However, in the coming decades, it has the ability to accomplish considerably more.

Why Ethanol?

In order to achieve the ambitious new decarbonization and air quality goals set forth in the EU's new "Green Deal," a stronger role for sustainable, low-carbon liquid fuels like renewable European ethanol is required. It will take innovative solutions that provide benefits both now and in the future to move the EU toward climate neutrality.

Without the need for costly new infrastructure, renewable ethanol, which is made from waste and residues from European agricultural products, already contributes significantly to lowering greenhouse gas emissions and other pollutants from today's light-duty automobiles. For this reason, an increasing number of EU Member States are using the E10 petrol blend to start decarbonizing immediately.

However, ethanol could lower emissions even further when used with high-octane gasoline or higher ethanol mixes like E20, E85, and ED95.

The EU might use its substantial agricultural resources and bioeconomy, along with the correct policies, to advance climate neutrality.

EU ethanol is…

  • ...more than just a fuel

  • …a European solution

  • …today’s best CO2 abatement option

  • …tomorrow’s best CO2 abatement option

At the Advanced Biofuels Forum, Craig Winneker will be speaking on: • Survey of key EU policy files affecting ethanol, • Why ethanol is vital to achieving Europe's climate ambitions, • The need for both 1g and 2g ethanol. Craig is the Director of communications at ePure and he’d be joined by other experts and stakeholders in discussions that could shape the future of the advanced biofuels market.
