The Impact of Climate Change on Subsea Cable Reliability
Subsea cables—the vital arteries carrying global data and power—are facing unprecedented risks due to the escalating and pervasive effects of climate change. While typically protected by the deep ocean environment, the extreme variability and energy now inherent in marine and coastal systems pose a fundamental threat to the integrity and reliability of this critical infrastructure, demanding new strategies for protection and route planning.
One of the most immediate threats comes from the increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events. More powerful hurricanes, cyclones, and marine heatwaves generate stronger currents, increased sediment movement, and larger wave fields. These dynamic forces increase the risk of cable fatigue, burial erosion (leading to exposure), and snagging by heavy fishing gear dragged in turbulent waters. Furthermore, rapid coastal erosion, accelerated by sea-level rise, destabilizes the crucial shore-end landings of cables, which are often the most vulnerable points in the entire system.
A second significant factor is the transformation of the underwater environment itself. Climate change-driven ocean warming alters marine life behavior, potentially leading to increased biological aggression from organisms that may damage cable jackets. More critically, the melting of polar ice caps and glaciers introduces massive volumes of freshwater, potentially triggering submarine landslides and turbidity currents that can sever cables with immense force over wide swaths of the seabed.
To mitigate these risks, the industry is incorporating climate resilience into design. This includes using heavier armoring for cables, planning routes that avoid known or emerging climate hotspots, and conducting deeper burial operations. Ultimately, adapting subsea infrastructure to climate change is an imperative for maintaining the continuity of the global digital and energy economy.
