The (R)Evolution of Biobased Materials for Coatings

Biodegradable and organic substances are used in the formulation of bio-based coatings, which are environmentally beneficial. They come from renewable resources like plants, marine life, and forestry products. The use of bio-based products in the paints and coatings industry has significantly increased recently, according to trends.

The following categories apply to the bio-based raw ingredients used to create coatings:

  • Materials made from fatty acids and vegetable oils, such as lesquerolic acid and calendula oil.

  • Natural polymers like chitosan, starch, and cellulose.

  • Monomers derived from biomaterials, such as succinic acid, styrene, etc.

  • Biodegradable additives and solvents, such as ethanol, para-xylene, etc.

Due to its numerous advantages, which include the following below, researchers have recently underlined the potential application of bio-based coatings in a variety of industries.

  • Reduced emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) during the manufacture of biobased coatings

  • Lowering of VOC content

  • Decreased reliance on fossil fuels, and

  • Biodegradability

Bio-based coatings have found use in a variety of industries, including robotics, furniture, packaging, electronics, building, and construction, due to their many advantages.

1st - 2nd March, 2023 international experts on bio-based coatings and raw materials will come together in Berlin to discuss latest findings and innovations in this area at the World Biopolymers and Bioplastics Innovation Forum!
